Life Lessons from our Pets

Gentle reminders to slow down, breath deeper, and live with the same presence our animals teach us every day.

Rest Your Heart

Zen Master: Sasha

Be as gentle with yourself as you would be with someone you love.

This lesson is inspired by Sasha, another of my soul-cats, whose time with me was far too short.

The first time I saw him, I had wandered into an animal shelter on accident (oops), and there he was - sitting right at the front of his kennel, looking at me as if to say, "Well... where have you been?" It was so strong and obvious; I'd never been struck so clearly with anything like that before. From that moment on, we belonged to each other.

Sasha filled every day with joy, curiosity, and love. Although he was only with me for a few short months, he left an imprint on my heart that never faded. He lost his battle with FIP, often called the "kitten killer," before effective treatments had been discovered. I was devastated. A bond that should have lasted years only lasted months, but the love he gave in that short time changed me forever. In the time that followed, I kept asking myself: What would Sasha want me to do? How can I get past this? The answer eventually led me to animal rescue and fostering. I couldn't change Sasha's story, but I could help write a happier ending for other pets who needed someone.

Rest Your Heart is about creating space, and recognizing that our hearts need care just as much as our bodies do.

Life brings joy, but it also brings loss, disappointment, heartbreak, and seasons that leave us feeling worn thin. Our first instinct is often to push through, stay busy, or convince ourselves that we should be "over it" by now.

But healing usually doesn't work that way. Sometimes our hearts need rest. Sometimes they need quiet. Sometimes they simply need permission to feel what they are feeling, without judgment or a timeline.

This lesson is closely tied to the Rainbow Bridge and the bittersweet truth that the greatest cost of loving deeply is eventually saying goodbye. Yet it reaches beyond pet loss alone. There are many ways our hearts become tired, and every one of them deserves compassion. So when your heart feels heavy, allow yourself to slow down. Rest.

Sasha reminds me that being gentle with ourselves is not weakness. It is an act of kindness.

Grieve if you need to and heal at your own pace. Try to offer yourself the same unconditional love your pets have always given you. Sometimes, that is exactly what your heart needs most.

Some wounds don't need fixing. They simply need kindness.
